There's a young woman who was raped by two juveniles. Our justice system failed her once by reaching a plea deal with her rapists -- unbeknownst to the victim. She named her rapists on Twitter, saying "I'm not protecting anyone that made my life a living Hell." Now she faces contempt charges that could result in jail time and a fine. As a victim of sexual assault and as a survivor, I am appalled by what is happening to this young woman. When her attackers were given a plea deal, she was ordered by the Judge not to discuss this event and was told that if she did discuss it, she would face a $500 fine and up to 180 days in jail. The Kentucky District Court’s decision not only impacts her life but the lives of all victims of sexual assault. While at Wellesley, I came out as a survivor. People were shocked. I then met other women who said the same thing had happened to them. At a drunken MIT party, on campus after a block party on Tupelo Lane, by someone who they thought was a friend, by a family member, the list goes on. And many of us were too scared to report it or take action on it. This young woman did take action and now she is being punished for her bravery. Please take a moment to sign this petition.
